#NationalTacoDay: Tortilla Opens in Cambridge

To celebrate National Taco Day, fast-casual Cali-Mexican restaurant, Tortilla, has opened its doors to the Cambridge public.

Tortilla is your local burrito and taco restaurant, offering authentic California-style Mexican food to eat in or take away. Fillings are prepared fresh in-store daily, with gluten free, vegetarian and vegan options to cater for a range of dietary requirements. Last night we were invited to meet the team, sample the delicious Mexican menu and soak up the atmosphere.

Tortilla opened in October 2007 and is now the largest fast-casual Mexican restaurant brand in the UK and Europe.

The Setting

Situated in the heart of Cambridge, The Market Square, Tortilla is only a 2 minute walk from the Grafton Centre. For that reason, it is the perfect lunch stop for those working in the city centre, or those on a weekend shopping trip.

The Style

Don’t expect Sombreros and moustachioed men in sequinned waistcoats playing guitar, Tortilla do Mexican a little differently. With a cool and modern California vibe, Tortilla Cambridge has earthy tones, pops of colour and industrial light fixings.

Modern prints add visual interest to the fast paced restaurant, and a chilled out Cali-Mexican soundtrack plays throughout the dining area, setting a casual vibe.

The Food

With fresh and healthy burritos at the core of Tortilla, there were plenty of delicious ingredients to choose from. Starting with the base, we chose one of the gluten free options: a naked burrito bowl. Next we added lettuce, black beans, pulled pork, chorizo, sour cream, guacamole and medium spiced salsa. What a flavour explosion!

Our only critique: some of the elements like the black beans and salsa were very wet and runny. This meant by the end of the meal the bottom of the bowl was drowning in liquid – not ideal. Apart from that, it was very delicious!
