Veganuary in and around Cambridgeshire

Right guys, it is time to down the mince pies, and attempt to follow some kind of vaguely healthy eating pattern again.

For a while now the craze of Veganuary has flooded through the nation, starting in 2014.

Following a vegan diet has become increasingly more popular, due to new generations wanting to follow a more sustainable lifestyle.

With this new wave has come new food vendors and establishments, particularly in Cambridgeshire.

Below we wanted to give you a few little tips of some great places we love to go and eat tasty vegan treats in!

Lucy at 35

Lucy35

Opening last year Lucy at 35 is a super tasty vegan cafe within Ely Spa. All food served there is vegan and gluten free.

Their menu is regularly changing, whilst keeping on some customer favourites like their signature carrot cake, which you really must try! Great local friendly atmosphere, a brilliant addition to Ely!

Wandering Yak

Wanderyak

If you haven’t caught these guys at a street food event yet then you really are missing out.

We have been huge fans for years, inspired by the flavours of the Middle East and India, one of their main offerings is the famous mix and match mezze box.

A mixed box of delights including Turkish bulgar salad with herbs and pomegranate, chilli and mint, smoky aubergine sauce, salad and ginger pickled cabbage, beetroot muhammara, griddled hand-made pitta and smoked paprika saute potatoes with lime creme fraiche and any two from:

  • Crunchy Egyptian falafel
  • Butternut squash fritters with herb and chilli pesto
  • Lime-drenched halloumi
  • Feta baked with chilli and za’tar
  • Roast spiced cauliflower with tahini, lemon and agave sauce
  • Griddled harissa tofu
  • Fresh ripe avocado with sesame gomasao

Meatless

Meatless

New kid on the block, Meatless launched towards the end of last summer, and never looked back!

You can not miss this beautiful bright blue van popping up amongst other street food vendors. The guys behind Meatless run long time food truck Guerrilla Kitchen, so it’s safe to say their flavours are insane.

Not all their dishes are vegan, but extremely easy to adapt. Food you can expect to see on their menus – Korean beetroot kebab, Chykun katsu ramen, buffalo cauliflower, they also make their own seitan (wheat based meat alternative) and had a festive option of cranberry, sprouts and ginger! Mmmmmm.

These guys have been in Cambridge for a little while now, starting with a restaurant on Mitchams Corner, they now have a space on King Street too! And watch this space as they are also opening in London in the next few months.

Offering up great vegan brunch and lunch options, with an ace selection of cakes! We recommend you try out their famous V.L.T -Smokey tempeh ‘bacon’, tomatoes, lettuce and creamy mayo. Definitely head over there soon!

So far they have been popping up around Cambridge, with a residency at 2468 Bar, but they will soon be opening their own restaurant on Regent Street! So keep your eyes peeled!

We really want to try out their Bbk burger – miso and lime mayo, lime slaw, dopplepatti glazed in sticky Korean BBQ sauce, five spice pulled jack fruit, pickled pear and cucumber in chilli – WOW.
